Check out all the best of the week in Issue 227 of the Tech Smart Boss Newsletter.
If I had to name one tool that is absolutely essential it would be email. It’s essential to our business, and we’ve recommended tools like G Suite and Office 365 in the past, but it’s also essential in our personal lives and most of us have multiple free email accounts from places like Gmail, outlook, yahoo, etc.
My thought is that if a product is free, it means that you’re really the product. More specifically your actions, perhaps your data, and the ability to drive ads to you.
To be a free service, the value of your activity/data must be worth something to the vendor. The money earned by eavesdropping and pumping that info into algorithms in order to make improved recommendations or to simply aggregate your data and sell to others as paid product must make enough profit for them to give you the service free.
Over time, I’ve just become a little more focused on privacy and more concerned about just handing over my data and patterns to big giants like Google and Microsoft.
So this week’s Cool Tech of the Week combines two things very important to a Tech Smart Boss, email and privacy. It’s Fastmail.
Put simply, Fastmail is privacy first, secure email. I’ve been using it for about a month now and I have missed absolutely nothing compared to Gmail or outlook. The only thing I can think of would be some ecosystem integrations such as Gmail extensions or login using your Gmail account, but I don’t use those anyway, I always prefer to log in with email.
I’m going to put together a video on Fastmail and post on our YouTube channel, so stay tuned for that, but in the meanwhile, I encourage everyone to check it out and sign up for their free account and start taking email privacy into their own hands.
Once you sign up, you’ll see they also have affordable paid options where you can use your own domain, or even tie in with a team to use as a business email option. I haven’t quite gone there yet, but I’m strongly considering it and will keep you up to date.
This link is a special 10% discount off the first year for anyone interested in their paid plans (and nope we get no affiliate fees for this, just happy to pass along savings to the community). Check out Fastmail and let us know what you think – https://www.fastmail.com/techsmartboss/
We send out the Tech Smart Boss newsletter, once a week, at 10am EST on Saturday. Sign up here (and you can unsubscribe in the footer of the email anytime you like).
